A Frenzy for Two (2005)
Eugene Ionesco’s 1962 absurdist farce, Frenzy For Two a couple living amidst a kind of generic revolution partake in endless and senseless quarrels. The lovers' incessant arguing mirrors the physical chaos around them and vice versa. The play has highly structured rhythmical movement, alternating calm and frenzy, silence and dialogue, stillness and stage business. The director adapted this to his own means utilising multi-ethnic casting to serve as a sort of metaphor for the state of the then current socio-political climate in South Africa. Two SA journalists are locked in a perpetual debate, over a truly absurd disagreement, in spite of the romantic “vacation-spot” surroundings: Bagdad, 2004. Styles of comedyprotest theatre and theatre of cruelty were combined in an age where trade is commonly practiced: reason for madness, blood for oil.
